Disturbance Compensator for Vibration Damping of a Quarter Car

Preview Disturbance Compensator

If the disturbance affecting a dynamical system is known, a disturbance compensator can be build. The quarter car is disturbed by road irregularities. A sensor mounted in the front bumper of a car can measure the road surface so that the disturbance is known in advance. The preview disturbance compensator uses this information to adjust the active suspension proactively with regard to the future pot-hole or bump.

Nonlinear Disturbance Compensator

Usually, quarter cars are modelled as linear two-mass oscillators. While this represents the dynamic behaviour sufficiently at the equilibrium point, there are major deviations at high compression of the suspension due to nonlinear spring and damper dynamics, coulomb friction and kinematic transmission. To include these effects in the disturbance compensator design nonlinear methods are necessary.
