Preview control of active suspension systems

Driving comfort is an important characteristic of a car but its optimization is in conflict with other objectives like driving safety. With new technical possibilities, the demands on comfort are naturally also becoming greater, and especially with regard to autonomous vehicles, we can assume that this topic will become even more important in the future.

In order to meet the requirements, passive suspension systems are not sufficient, but we must investigate active components and their intelligent control. To this end, it is helpful that modern vehicles have extensive sensor technology for detecting the environment and their own driving status. They can also increasingly communicate with each other and with the cloud (Car-to-X). This not only makes it possible to detect road irregularities even before the vehicle passes over them, but also allows the road profile information to be stored centrally and/or transmitted to following vehicles.

We are currently investigating what a predictive, cloud-supported control system could look like, what type and quality of the exchanged information is required and how this information can be generated.
