Sustainable Acoustic Metamaterial based on Fungal Mycelium

Shifting from traditional materials to sustainable ones is a key move for environmental protection. Mycelium-based composite materials are made of a substrate that originates from by-products of the agricultural or forestry industry. Fungal mycelium, the root of mushrooms, acts like a glue to connect the substrate as a composite with a lower ecological footprint than traditional fossil fuel-based materials. The potential use of such composites as sound-absorbing materials is particularly promising, but we know little about it. This work seeks to characterize the relationship between production parameters and acoustic absorption behavior through measurements and the finite element method.
