Computational and experimental vibroacoustics

Lightweight design is an increasingly important aspect in various engineering disciplines and aims at reducing the energy consumption during manufacturing, operation and recycling of a product. Lightweight structures are characterized by a high stiffness relative to their mass, which however makes them prone to noise, vibration and harshness. In order to mitigate unwanted vibrations in an early stage of the design process, it is crucial for the engineer to understand the effects of structure-acoustic interaction and its implications on the behavior of the lightweight structure at hand.

Koji’s research contributes the numerical modeling and experimental characterization of structure-acoustic interaction, with particular focus on acoustic loading and radiation damping. The theoretical content of his work mostly revolves around the acoustic boundary element method (BEM), which allows evaluating the far-field sound radiation. By combining BEM with a finite element model of the structure, free and forced vibrations, involving complex material and geometric configurations, are analyzed. In addition, latest developments in the field of numerical linear algebra facilitate a computationally efficient characterization of structure-acoustic interaction. Finally, experimental modal analyses using laser Doppler vibromety and experimental evaluation of sound radiation are performed for both model updating and verification purposes.
