1982 - 1987 Student of Electrical Engineering at Universität Karlsruhe (TH), specializing in Automatic Control.
1988 - 1991 Research Assistant at the Control Systems Laboratory (Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Dr.-Ing. E.h. O. Föllinger) of Universität Karlsruhe, resulting in a doctoral thesis.
1994 Habilitation in the field of "System Dynamics and Control" at the Department of Electrical Engineering of the University of the Federal Armed Forces Hamburg.
1991 - 1997 Working in industry at SIEMENS Electrocom, Konstanz, in the Development Department for postal sorting machines. Responsible for different R&D projects (19 Patents), head of the Mechanical Development Department. Lecturer at Universität Karlsruhe.
1997 - 2004 Professor in Faculty 1, Physics/Electrical Engineering, of Universität Bremen. Head of the Institute of Automation.
Since Oct. 2004 Head of the Institute of Automatic Control of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of TU München.
