1982 - 1987	Student of Electrical Engineering at Universität Karlsruhe (TH), specializing in Automatic Control.
1988 - 1991	Research Assistant at the Control Systems Laboratory (Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Dr.-Ing. E.h. O. Föllinger) of Universität Karlsruhe, resulting in a doctoral thesis.
1994	Habilitation in the field of "System Dynamics and Control" at the Department of Electrical Engineering of the University of the Federal Armed Forces Hamburg.
1991 - 1997	Working in industry at SIEMENS Electrocom, Konstanz, in the Development Department for postal sorting machines. Responsible for different R&D projects (19 Patents), head of the Mechanical Development Department. Lecturer at Universität Karlsruhe.
1997 - 2004	Professor in Faculty 1, Physics/Electrical Engineering, of Universität Bremen. Head of the Institute of Automation.
Since Oct. 2004	Head of the Institute of Automatic Control of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of TU München.

2008 – 2012	Vice Speaker of the DFG Collaborative Research Centre 768, ‘Managing Cycles in Innovation Processes’
2007 - 2016	DFG Liaison Officer at Technical University of Munich
2016 - 2024	Member of the Review Board 407 ‘Systemtechnik’ of German Research Council (DFG)
